Terms and Conditions

AALS Terms of Use for Section Discussion Lists and Privacy Guidelines

Thank you for joining an Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Section. To ensure the best possible experience for all participants, we have established some basic rules and privacy guidelines for participation.

By joining this Section and accessing or posting on its discussion list, you agree that you have read and will follow these guidelines and Terms of Use. Each AALS Section discussion list is a forum for the exchange of points of view. Opinions expressed on a Section discussion list do not necessarily represent the views of the Section or of AALS.

Access to AALS Section lists is provided free of charge but is limited to faculty and administrators at member and fee-paid law schools as well as associate members of AALS Sections. Accessing or posting on a Section discussion list does not create a professional services relationship or any other relationship with AALS.

Questions should be directed to AALS Staff via the Contact Us link on this site.

Section Discussion List Procedures

    • State concisely and clearly the topic of your comments in the subject line. This allows members to respond more appropriately to your posting and makes it easier for members to search the archives by subject.
    • Send messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me, too" to individuals, not to the entire list. Do this by using the "Reply to Sender" link in every message.
    • Do not send administrative messages, such as “remove me from the list,” to the group. Instead, use the web interface to change your settings or to remove yourself from a list. If you are changing email addresses, you do not need to remove yourself from the list and rejoin under your new email address. Simply change your settings or contact AALS at support@aals.org for help.

The Terms of Use

Your use of a Section discussion list is subject to the terms and conditions set forth below and to all applicable laws and regulations. AALS may update these Terms of Use from time to time. AALS reserves the right to limit or to bar participation on a Section discussion list for violations of these Terms of Use.

    • Respect others. Focus on the content of posts and not on the people making them.
    • Respect the purpose of the Section.  Use the Section discussion list to share points of view, constructive feedback, questions, and goals instead of products or services.
    • Use caution when discussing products. Information posted on the discussion lists and in the libraries is available for all to see, and comments are subject to libel, slander, and antitrust laws.
    • All defamatory, abusive, profane, threatening, offensive, or illegal materials are strictly prohibited. Do not post anything that you would not want the world to see or that you would not want anyone to know came from you.
    • Respect intellectual property. Post content that you have personally created or have permission to use and have properly attributed to the content creator.
    • When posting, please indicate if the item is not available for reuse. It’s also advisable to contact the owner of any material if you would like to reuse it.
    • All information, data, text, software, graphics, video, messages, or other materials (“Content”) posted on an AALS Section discussion list are the sole responsibility of the person from whom such Content originated.
    • This site is provided as a service for the members of the Section. AALS is not responsible for the opinions and information posted on this site by others. We disclaim all warranties with regard to information posted on this site. In no event shall AALS be liable for any special, indirect, or consequential damages or any damages whatsoever resulting from loss of use, data, or profits, arising out of or in connection with the use or performance of any information posted on this site.
    • Do not post any information or other material if doing so would violate any copyright. By posting copyrighted material, the posting party warrants and represents that he or she owns the copyright with respect to such material, has received permission from the copyright owner, or is otherwise lawfully permitted to do so. In addition, the posting party grants the Section and users of this site the nonexclusive right and license to display, copy, publish, distribute, transmit, print, and use such information or other material.
    • Messages should not be posted if they encourage or facilitate members to arrive at any agreement that either expressly or impliedly leads to price fixing, a boycott of another's business, or other conduct intended to illegally restrict free trade. Messages that encourage or facilitate an agreement about the following subjects are inappropriate: prices, discounts, or terms or conditions of sale; salaries; profits, profit margins, or cost data; market shares, sales territories, or markets; allocation of customers or territories; or selection, rejection, or termination of customers or suppliers.
    • By using an AALS Section discussion list, you agree not to engage in unacceptable use of the discussion list to:
      • Upload, post, or transmit any Content that is unlawful, false or misleading, grossly offensive, threatening, abusive harassing, tortuous, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, pornographic, libelous, invasive of another’s privacy, hateful, or racially or ethnically insensitive;
      • Collect, use, or store any personally identifiable information about other discussion list users without their consent;
      • Impersonate any person or entity (including a discussion list user or moderator), or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity;
      • Upload, post, or transmit any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, or any other form of solicitation, with the exception of notices about the availability of law school positions;
      • Upload, post, or transmit any material that contains a software virus or any other computer code, file, or program designed to interrupt, destroy, or limit the functionality of any computer software or hardware or telecommunications equipment;
      • Violate any law (whether local, state, or federal);
      • Forge headers or otherwise intentionally disguise the origin of any Content or communication; interfere with or disrupt the Section discussion list, or servers of networks connected to the discussion list;
      • Upload, post, or transmit any Content related to partisan political campaigning or fundraising;
      • Falsely express or imply that any statements you make are endorsed by AALS or an AALS Section;
      • Sublicense, sell, reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble or purpose to sublicense or sell any portion of the discussion list;
      • Obtain, copy, monitor, index, or data mine through the use of a robot, spider, other automated device, or any manual process, the Section discussion list or its Content (except routine copying and pasting of information being shared in the Content in a manner consistent with its purpose, as expressly permitted by AALS);
      • Remove any copyright, trademark, or other proprietary rights, notices contained in a discussion list or on any Content;
      • Engage in any other activity in conflict with the spirit or intent of this agreement or that might violate the rights of others or give rise to liability in the sole discretion of AALS.
  • You understand that by using a Section discussion list, you may be exposed to Content that may offend you or challenge your beliefs. You may notify AALS if you think another user has violated the Terms of Use.
  • AALS does not actively monitor the site for inappropriate postings and does not on its own undertake editorial control of postings. However, in the event that any inappropriate posting is brought to the attention of AALS, appropriate action will be taken.

In addition, disabling cookies may cancel opt-outs that rely on cookies, such as web analytics or targeted advertising opt-outs.

Your California Privacy Rights

California law permits residents of California to request certain details about how their information is shared with third parties for direct marketing purposes. If you are a California resident and you have questions about our practices with respect to sharing information with third parties and affiliates for their direct marketing purposes and your ability to exercise choice, please send your request to the following email address: info@aals.org or write to us at the mailing address in the “How to Contact Us” section of this Privacy Policy. Because we link to social media sites, other parties may collect your personally identifiable information about your online activities over time and across different websites when you visit the AALS Websites.

Individual Data Rights

Your Rights. You have the following rights in relation to your Personal Data:

  • Right of access: If you ask us, we will confirm whether we have your Personal Data and, if so, will work with you to provide a copy of the personal data you request. If you require additional copies, we may need to charge a reasonable fee.
  • Right to rectification: If your Personal Data is inaccurate or incomplete, you are entitled to have it rectified or completed. If you ask us, where possible and lawful to do so, we will also tell you with whom we shared your Personal Data so that you can contact them directly.
  • Right to erasure: You may ask us to delete or remove your Personal Data and we will do so in some circumstances, such as where we no longer need it (we may not delete your data when other interests outweigh your right to deletion). If you ask us, where possible and lawful to do so, we will also tell you with whom we shared your Personal Data so that you can contact them directly.
  • Right to restrict processing: You may ask us to restrict or ‘block’ the processing of your Personal Data in certain circumstances, such as where you contest the accuracy of that Personal Data or object to us processing it. We will tell you before we lift any restriction on processing. If we have shared your Personal Data with others, we will tell them about the restriction where possible. • Right to withdraw consent: If we rely on your consent to process your Personal Data, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time. This will not affect the lawfulness of processing based on your prior consent.

When we process your Personal Data for our legitimate interests, we make sure to consider and balance any potential impact on you, and your rights under data protection laws. Our legitimate interests do not automatically override your interests. We will not use your Personal Data for activities where our interests are overridden by the impact on you, unless we have your consent,or those activities are otherwise required or permitted to by law. You have the right to object to processing that is based on our legitimate interests. For more information on your rights, please see “Your Rights” section above.

How We Protect Personal Information

We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to assist us in protecting the personal information we collect against accidental, unlawful, or unauthorized destruction, loss, alteration, access, disclosure, or use. For example, we use security firewalls for all direct and wireless connections to the Internet, maintain antivirus protections that are installed and configured to automatically search for and download updates and to perform virus scans daily, encrypt all email, network file transfers, and web transactions containing Personally Identifiable Information through commercial grade, industry-standard protocols, and require that our vendors maintain the security of documents stored on their servers.

Please note that no electronic transmission of information can be entirely secure. We cannot guarantee that the security measures we have in place to safeguard personal information will never be defeated or fail, or that those measures will always be sufficient or effective. You should safeguard your AALS account username and password and not share that information with anyone. You should take steps to protect against unauthorized access to your account by, among other things, signing off after using a shared computer and choosing a robust password that nobody else knows or can easily guess. We are not responsible for any lost, stolen, or compromised passwords or for any activity on your account via unauthorized password activity.

Please note that we will never ask for your AALS account username or password via email.

For additional details about the security measures we have implemented to safeguard personal information, please contact us at info@aals.org.

Credit Card Information

Once your credit card information, including the CVV number, has been passed to the credit card processing company for verification, only partial information is retained by AALS for future identification of the transaction. This partial information includes several digits (but not all) of your credit card number, the expiration date, and your billing address when available. We never retain the CVV number. Alternatively, your payment to the AALS may be processed by a third-party service provider under an agreement with the AAMC.

Children’s Privacy

AALS does not direct its websites to children under the age of thirteen. We require registered users of the AALS Websites to be at least eighteen years old. If we learn that a user is under eighteen years of age, we will promptly delete any personal information that the individual has provided to us.

Updates to this Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated periodically and without prior notice to you to reflect changes in our personal information practices. We will post a prominent notice on the AALS Websites to notify you of any significant changes to our Privacy Policy and indicate at the top of this page when it was most recently updated.
